Zur Reinigung werden spezielle organische Fasern für die Ultra- und Mikrofiltration zur Wasseraufbereitung und Abwasserreinigung eingesetzt. Grundprinzip dieser Filtration ist die Nutzung poröser organischer Hohlfasermembranen mit Mikroporen als Filtermedium. Die Fasern haben einen Außendurchmesser von weniger als 1 mm. Um eine ausreichende Oberfläche zu erhalten und einen konstanten Durchfluss zu gewähren, werden hunderte von Fasern zu Bündeln zusammengefasst und um ein Modul gewickelt. Auf eine regelmäßige chemische Reinigung kann verzichtet werden. Vorteile der neuen Membran sind:
